Trams To Stanley Park

John Woodman

Even though the original plans for a tram extension running into Stanley Park off Whitegate Drive when the designs for the New Park were being prepared - were dropped in favour of a less expensive bus service from the Promenade - in fact trams did in fact run to Stanley Park ............. in Vancouver.

The British Columbia Electric Railway together with the Vancouver city system on the Pacific coast of North America however managed to build a tramway directly to the main entrance of that city's Stanley Park on its development. A tram turning circle at the park entrance provided an efficient crowd handling terminus; not quite as extensive as the Pleasure Beach tram terminus. The photo shows a Vancouver city car at Stanley Park, with one of the wartime delivered Vancouver PCC cars in the background. Image : John Woodman Archive
