Coastal Towns in Need of New Direction

One resort town taking the initiative to reinvigorate its attractions utilising an iconic historic structure is Great Yarmouth. A House of Lords Select Committee has been examining the condition of English coastal towns over the past year and will be publishing its findings and recommendations in the near future.

Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust with its small collection of period Blackpool tramcars which operated along the Fylde coast over many decades has its stated aim of creating a permanent exhibition alongside displays of trawler history and famous Cadillacs of the 'Fleetwood' marque at Wyre Dock. Encompassing a development scheme branded 'Fleetwood Quays' to bring significant investment to the town - this visionary plan is the subject of a presentation at the 2019 MIPIM international property event being held in Cannes this week. Architects BrockCarmichael working for Wyre Dock Development are raising the bar on the art of the possible for Fleetwood's waterfront.

Their approach and concept for Fleetwood is in good company alongside Wirral Waters development - a partnership of Wirral Council and Peel Holdings; and Ellesmere Port scheme offered by North Cheshire Council with its partners. Elsewhere of course Morecambe's Eden project supported by Lancaster and Morecambe Council has already attracted headlines and investment interest; whilst other coastal communities are partnering with private sector entrepreneurs and visionary companies to create new directions for their towns up and down the country. Blackpool Council very recently unveiled the landmark scheme for the former Central Station site with expectation that this £300 Million leisure development will dramatically enhance the resort's attractions to future generations of visitors, while at the same time create vital new employment potential within the town.

All to play for. Great Yarmouth is in good company seizing the moment and taking a bold initiative using its own 'Winter Gardens' asset as a catalyst for change.
