Tracks from the Past - Birmingham

Blackpool isn't the only place in England where tramtrack reveals former era when electric trams provided the principal means of urban transport. Behind Birmingham's imposing City Hall and unmarked by signage a remnant of the former 3' 6" gauge system lies perfectly preserved in the roadway.

These tracks once saw daily passage of Birmingham's staid double deck tramcars. Only a few yards away hoardings around road excavation marked the foundations of the next generation of trams to traverse the same location - this time to standard gauge.
