LEARNING FROM THE SUCCESS OF GRIMSBY FISHING HERITAGE CENTRE

Wyre Dock Development met recently with the Operations Manager of the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre at Alexander Dock.

Detailed discussion on the origins and remit of the Centre included reference to the role of North Lincolnshire Council who are responsible for its further development.

A hosted tour included viewing the MV Ross Tiger moored alongside in Alexander Dock which was gifted to the Centre by the company. Grimsby is engaged in similar objectives to those we are working on for Wyre Dock in Fleetwood.

The original area of the extensive port facility (which has management by ABP) contains a diversity of original structures housing specialist businesses supporting Grimsby's former trawler fleet. The meeting included a senior Council officer responsible for liaising with business leaders in promoting efforts to develop tourism utilising the considerable heritage of the fishing and trawler industry - much like our aims in Fleetwood.

The site is known as the 'Casbah' because of its narrow confine streets and diversity of buildings.  Grimsby has formed a Business led Development Board which includes the founder of Carphone Warehouse and a proactive Council Chief Executive. A hosted tour included viewing the MV Ross Tiger moored alongside in Alexander Dock which was gifted to the Centre by the company.

There was consensus in arranging a fact finding exchange between Fleetwood and Grimsby on strategic economic and social objectives. This will be progressed in coming months.
